Retiring is an opportunity to finally head off on the travels you've been dreaming of all those years. However, safety is a crucial factor to consider when choosing your travel destinations, and we know it can be top of mind during your travel planning. Here are some of the safest countries to explore to get you started.

1. Japan

Japan is where the modern and ancient world meet. From traditional temples in Kyoto, to pristine beaches in Mijako-jima and the bustling megacity of Tokyo, Japan has something for everyone. It also has top healthcare facilities and one of the lowest crime rates in the world. The Japanese hot springs (Onsen) are also good for mental health and wellbeing, the Japanese even attribute these to being healthier in older age.

2. Cuba

Cuba is a jewel in the Caribbean. Home to beautiful colonial towns such as Vinales, Trinidad and Santiago de Cuba, as well as the buzzing capital city of Havana, with its vibrant music and dance culture, to picturesque beaches with warm Caribbean waters in Varedero. The locals are extremely friendly and helpful, they want you to have the best time in their country. Despite misconceptions, Cuba is generally safe and has one of the best healthcare systems in Latin America. Skip the hotels, instead opt for a 'Casa Particular', here you get a homestay experience with the privacy and amenities of a private room.

3. Canada

Great for people who want adventure but more home comforts. Being English speakers we are already in a privileged position to be able to communicate with ease in most countries we visit, however knowing in advance that you will be able to speak the language can add a feeling of comfort and safety to a trip. Plus Canada has beautiful places to explore with numerous national parks such as Banff to beautiful cities such as Victoria and Quebec.

4. Costa Rica

A real adventure paradise, Costa Rica is leading the way in Ecotourism. Costa Rica promotes slow tourism, purposely under-developing some road networks to discourage mass tourism. The Costa Ricans or 'Ticos' are known for their warmth and hospitality with a wonderful relaxed outlook on life. It also has a low crime rate, great healthcare and warm weather all year round. Skip the city of San Jose and instead head out to explore the cloud forests of Monteverde, go white water rafting in La Fortuna, hike an active Volcano in El Arenal or simply chill out at the beaches on the Pacific or Caribbean coast.

5. New Zealand

New Zealand is a safe haven (with no known deadly animals!). This is great news for the arachnophobe amongst us! Perfect for those who love the great outdoors, New Zealand in a country filled with endless opportunities all year round, from skiing in Wanaka to glacier hiking in summer to sailing through Milford Sound. With its high safety standards this is the perfect destination for thrill-seekers. New Zealand's beauty spots offer an unforgettable experience.
