From exploring temples to volunteering with children, Angie has had some brilliant life-enhancing journeys so far that she’s planning to add to when retirement comes! Read on to find out about Angie’s experiences in Cambodia and where she has set her sights on next.

What first got you passionate about travel?

I spent 3 months travelling around the States with a girlfriend as a student over 45 years ago. We rented a red Chevy and drove through 5 states camping in National Parks along the way. I’ve never forgotten the sense of freedom and excitement discovering new places, wild experiences and meeting incredible people. It truly was a Thelma and Louise madcap holiday which fostered a lifelong passion for travel.

Where's your favourite place that you’ve visited so far?

In 2016 I spent 6 weeks volunteering at a school in Siem Reap, Cambodia. The children were wonderful, the temples were iconic especially visiting Angkor Wat at dawn and the buzz in Siem Reap was electric. I was worried that I would be lonely as a sole traveller. But within hours of arrival I had met so many like minded volunteers from all over the world of all ages. The whole experience was incredibly life enhancing and great fun.

Where’s the first place on your list to travel to when you retire?

I’d like to travel to South America. I’ve never been there before but I’m fascinated by the different cultures, the history and the people.

And finally, how do you think Retire & Roam could help people reading to feel confident and prepared when travelling in retirement?

As a mature traveller I like the structure of an organised trip with a detailed itinerary but also one which has flexibility built in for spontaneous activities. Safety is high on my list of priorities and I would need to feel confident about my own personal safety.

🙏 Thank you Angie for sharing your insight with us!
